When you apply for an Australian Partner Visa, Home Affairs looks at four parts of your relationship — often called the “four matters”: money, household, social life, and commitment. Below is what that means in plain English.

Financial aspects (money)
Home Affairs wants to see how you share day-to-day money and bigger costs. Useful evidence can include joint or clearly linked bank activity, rent or mortgage records, shared bills, transfers between you, and a simple explanation of who pays for what.
A marriage certificate or joint lease helps, but it is not enough on its own. Officers still need a clear picture of how you manage money together.
Nature of the household
This is about how you live as a couple: who does which chores, how you share the home, and whether your living arrangements look like a genuine household. Evidence often includes lease or occupancy records, mail to the same address, photos of your home life, and statements from people who have seen how you live.
If you have lived apart for work, study, or visa reasons, explain the timeline clearly and show how you stayed connected.
Social aspects of the relationship
Officers look at whether other people know you as a couple — family, friends, community, and public life. Evidence can include invitations, travel together, photos with dates and context, messages with family, and statements from people who know your relationship.
Social media alone is rarely enough. Short, specific statements from people who actually know you usually help more than generic templates.
Nature of the commitment
This covers the long-term nature of the relationship: how it developed, future plans, knowledge of each other’s lives, and evidence you intend to stay together. Relationship timelines, messages over time, wills or beneficiary details (where relevant), and consistent statutory declarations are common building blocks.
Gaps, short relationships, or previous refusals do not automatically end an application, but they need honest explanation and supporting evidence.
What a marriage certificate does — and does not — do
A marriage certificate, registered relationship, or joint residential lease does not mean the visa will be granted. Home Affairs still needs evidence that the relationship is genuine and continuing across the four matters.
