Which visa this page is about
Each visa has a number, called a subclass, so you can match a letter from the Department. You do not need that number to talk to us.
Apply in or from outside Australia
Student visa
You have a place in a registered course and can show you are a genuine student.
You need a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) — the official document from the school or university. The Genuine Student test is about why this course, why Australia, and what you will do afterwards — not a template statement. A partner or child who applies later is a separate application, not automatic.

Student Guardian visa
You need to stay in Australia as the guardian of a student who is under 18 (or in limited other cases).
This is not a work visa and not a partner visa. It is tied to the student’s enrolment and welfare arrangements.

Training visa
Workplace training or professional development with an approved sponsor.
The training has to be real. This is your visa; the sponsor’s paperwork is a separate application.

There is more than one stream (including vocational and higher education). Each has its own study, skills, English and timing rules. Missing the application window after you finish the course is a common, expensive mistake.

- Passport, current visa, and your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) or offer letter
- Academic transcripts and the course you want to do next
- Evidence of funds, and of ties to home (how you will live, and why you will study)
- If applying for a 485: completion letter, passport, English, and the date you finished
- Any refusal or notice that cancellation is being considered
Before you apply
Things that go wrong
- Changing course or school after the visa is granted can affect the visa. Check before you switch.
- Work hours on a student visa are limited. Working more than allowed is a cancellation risk.
- A 485 has a strict window after the course ends. Do not wait until you “have time.”
- A partner or child joining you later is not automatic. They make their own application.
